When planning for travel with someone who is elderly, there are certain considerations that have to be made that are not an issue for younger, healthy travelers. Things such as travel insurance for the elderly might be overlooked even though it can be critical to have in case of accident or injury in another country where Medicaid or Medicare benefits do not cover things. Elderly travel requires the elderly person or those going with him or her to make some accommodations so that the comfort and relaxation of that person is assured at all stages of the trip. As much as the elderly travel companion can be involved in the planning process is vital to the success of the trip, since he or she is the most aware of the limitations that the person has.

Elderly Travel By Air

When traveling long distances, elderly travel requires that the person is checked by the doctor to see if he is in good condition to go on that extensive of a trip. When flying or going on a cruise ship, the availability of medical treatment is limited, and the person needs to be in good enough health that this type of travel is safe to do. In addition, it is a good idea to schedule the flights so that they are at a good time of day to give time to get up and ready in the morning to get to the airport for the trip. If the person has a physical disability, elderly travel requires that the airport be told of these limitations so that wheelchairs or vehicles can be at the different gates to help with connections. Many times, in elderly travel, even if the person does not usually need to have a wheelchair to get around, it is easier to use one when traveling since rushing to a gate is tiring and the walk can be long in some cases.

Also, when preparing for elderly travel, the person should be dressed in loose fitting clothing to make it more comfortable on the plane. This allows for full circulation even when the person is in one position for long periods of time. Sometimes the person might need some specialty clothing such as compression stockings so that the circulation can be stimulated during these long trips. Another safety concern is to keep the medication that the elderly travel companion might need in a carry on bag since there are sometimes delays that could affect being able to get the luggage where the medication is contained.
