Because it is a gateway to the Costa Blanca, Alicante is a perfect touring base. Containing a pleasing mixture of ancient and modern culture and traditions, Alicante is found within the popular holiday region of the Costa Blanca. Found on the coast between the resorts of Elche and Benidorm, The city sits below its mountain top castle. The city and the surrounding landscape are scattered with churches with the most recognised of all of them being the Iglesia de Santa Maria. This is the oldest church in the city and was built between the 14th and 16th centuries with the church at one time being a mosque. The Cathedral of Saint Nicholas was built in the seventeenth century to honour Alicante’s patron saint and is therefore one of the most significant buildings for miles around.

Alicante has a great selection of old buildings to please sightseers and historians alike and can be seen all around the area with statues and columns making a feature of many a formerly mundane location. Offering a keen watch out to Alicante Bay, the Castillo de Santa Barbara is recognised as one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Easily reached by road or by lift (elevator) from the Paseo Maritimo, the fortress has unbeatable views of the stunning local scenery. In addition to the benefits the Castillo has on offer, Alicante offers more architectural treasures in the form of the nineteenth century bullring and the Provincial Gallery (formerly the Gavina Palace). The vast majority of the Alicante attractions are readily reached using a rental car from Alicante Airport. Nobody enjoys a celebration as much as the inhabitants and visitors of Alicante! Here you will discover an event of one type or another taking place throughout the year, no matter when you decide to go. One of the more serious of festivals in the Costa Blanca is that of the Easter Procession. Wearing black and carrying lighted candles, an effigy of Jesus is paraded on a cross through the streets. Every November, in honour of the Patron Saint Crist del Bon Encert, each town has an individual fiesta. Don’t be surprised to find that shops are closed all day, every day as everything stops for this wonderful event of dancing, singing and firework displays. On a less religious note, one of the most well known local festivals is the International Puppet Festival.
