Since Inverness received city status, the town of Fort William is now the largest of them all in the Highlands of Scotland. It is located at the southern edge of Great Glen and was originally created around the village of Inverlochy. It sits on the shores of both Loch Linnhe and Loch Eil and is very close to Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis.
It is used as a base by thousands of people who climb Ben Nevis each year and this accounts for the wide range and diversity of places to stay in Fort William. Below we take a look at just a few of the places that offer accommodation to those who are visiting Fort William or for the serious crowd who are going to climb to the summit of the mountain.
1. Onich Hotel and Gardens – This hotel can be found on Loch Linnhe’s shore and the gardens which are very attractive go right down to the water’s edge. As well as having fantastic views looking over the loch one can see the mountains of Glencoe to the east and Morvern and the Isle of Mull to the west. The Onich hotel is a fantastic place to get away from it all and just chill out.
2. The Corran Inn – Another small hotel situated on the shore line of Loch Linnhe adjacent to the Corran Ferry. So within ten minutes of leaving your hotel and taking the ferry you can be in Fort William and then on to Ben Nevis. Or you can take the ferry and travel to Glencoe again 10 minutes away. This is a hotel that is ideal as a base for exploring all that this part of Scotland whether on foot or by car. Its rooms are comfortable and welcoming and coming back to a bar with a coal fire burning helps you to relax after you’ve been out exploring the local countryside.
3. Ben Nevis Hotel & Leisure Club – If you’re looking to climb the famous mountain, this hotel is located right at its base. On one side of the hotel you have views looking out over the mounts and on the other to the west one has views out over Loch Linnhe. The rooms are comfortable as you’d expect but there is also the leisure club to keep you in shape. There is the 50 foot heated indoor pool, there is a sauna and steam room as well as a jacuzzio and a top class gymnasium.
4. Imperial Hotel – This hotel overlooks Loch Linnhe but is located in the heart of Fort William itself. The hotel is well appointed and so can really make you feel as if you are in a home away from home.
5. Lime Tree Small Hotel – Located on the outskirts of Fort William, this hotel is well worth considering as the base for your stay. As with almost everywhere locally, you will be treated to some truly spectacular views of Loch Linnhe and the surrounding mountains. This is a very contemporary hotel with all the amenities you’ve come to expect from modern hotels even though the building is one of the towns’ oldest. The rooms, 9 in total have been stylishly decorated and if the night air gets chilly, you can relax next to one of the open fires.
