Shanklin is a popular tourist destination on the Isle of Wight. During the reign of Queen Victoria this town became extremely fashionable and those living in London would spend their summer holidays here. Right the way through the eighteen hundreds lots of new facilities were built including a railway line from Shanklin to Ryde, a cliff lift and the pier which was unfortunately destroyed in the storms in 1987. Below, we’ll take a look at just a few of the places you can stay in Shanklin.

1. Belmont – This was originally a Victorian gentleman’s residence but was later turned into a hotel. Situated in the Old Village, it allows you easy access to the seafront at Shanklin and is open throughout the year with thirteen well appointed rooms. Some of the rooms have sea views whilst over look out over the hotels garden. Along with a veranda that you can sit on during the day and evenings and have a relaxing drink the hotel also has a heated outdoor swimming pool.

2. Bourne Hall Country House Hotel – This property was originally built as home for one of Queen Victoria’s ladies in waiting back in the 1860′s. It has three acres of gardens dating back to that time and has all the comforts one would expect from a large country house including many modern amenities as well. If you want a romantic break in peaceful settings this is a very suitable hotel to arrange a booking at.

3. Carlton Hotel – Located on the cliffs overlooking Shanklin with panoramic views of Sandown Bay. Despite the cliff top location, it is still close to Shanklin’s sandy beaches and also Shanklin’s Old Village and to stroll along the esplanade. The hotel has been updated since it was built in Victorian times and provides you with the kinds of amenities you expect from a modern hotel.

4. Mayfair – This hotel is situated on Shanklin’s Eastcliff Promenade and although the hotel faces towards the sea the gardens and terrace face out across Sandown Bay towards Nab Tower and Culver Cliff. It is within easy walking distance of the seaside beaches and the Old Village. It is also close to Shanklin Chine. Plus during the summer months one has the opportunity to use the kidney shaped swimming pool which is set in a sheltered area of the hotels gardens.

5. Luccombe Hall Country House – Surrounded by peaceful gardens high up on the cliffs above Shanklin provides guests with wonderful views out over the sea. The hotel has an indoor swimming pool and a large heated outdoor pool plus you have access to a beach as well. The hotel has been tastefully decorated and many of the original features of the building have been preserved. Plus this hotel is suitable not just for couples for a romantic weekend break but have wonderful facilities for children as well including an outdoor play area.
